What is a deep tissue massage?

A deep tissue massage uses techniques that target the inner layers of your muscles and connective tissues, perfect for treating musculoskeletal issues, like strains and sports injuries. This is achieved by applying sustained pressure using slow, deep strokes to target the inner layers of your muscles and connective tissues.

Before having a massage with us at Walking On Clouds, one of our therapists will get to know the issues that you are facing and the areas of your body which are troubling you the most. After a discussion with the therapist and once you feel comfortable, the massage will begin. You will be asked to lie on your back or your front, depending on where the targetted area is.

Our massage therapists will start off slowly, applying little pressure to warm up the muscles. After this, they will then start working on the problemed areas, kneading and stroking with a strong but comfortable amount of pressure.

Unlike a Swedish massage, which focuses on overall relaxation, a deep tissue massage goes further, reaching deeper layers to treat chronic pain and persistent tension.

How Deep Tissue Massage Works (Step-by-Step)

A typical session involves:

  1. Consultation – your therapist will assess your needs and any problem areas.

  2. Muscle warm-up – light strokes and gentle pressure prepare the tissues.

  3. Deeper strokes – slow, targeted pressure is applied to reach deeper layers of muscle.

  4. Trigger point release – sustained pressure on tight “knots” to ease chronic pain.

  5. Aftercare guidance – advice on stretching, hydration, and recovery to extend the benefits.

This structured approach ensures both immediate relief and long-term improvements in flexibility, posture, and muscular health.

Benefits of Deep Tissue Massage

Although deep tissue massage does offer psychological benefits, the primary focus is to offer physical wellness. As suggested by the name, the massage aims to treat muscle pain by deeply massaging into the tissues of the muscles. Science-backed evidence suggests that this massage can help to reduce pain in people with chronic low back pain.

Deep tissue massage may support people with conditions such as:

  • Fibromyalgia

  • Sports injuries

  • Plantar fasciitis

  • High blood pressure

  • Sciatica

  • Tennis elbow

Core benefits include:

  • Pain relief – easing chronic aches, muscle tightness, and tension in deeper tissues.

  • Stress reduction – calming the nervous system and promoting overall relaxation.

  • Post-exercise recovery – reducing muscle soreness and supporting quicker recovery after physical activity.

  • Better mobility – improving flexibility, circulation, and overall range of motion.

What to Expect During Your Session

At Walking on Clouds, we prioritise your comfort and well-being from the moment you arrive. Your therapist will:

  1. Carry out a personalised consultation to understand your needs.

  2. Begin with light pressure to gently warm the muscles.

  3. Gradually apply deeper strokes and sustained pressure to release tension.

  4. Focus on specific problem areas while ensuring you remain comfortable.

  5. Finish the session with relaxation techniques to leave you feeling renewed.

Every treatment is adapted to your body’s needs, whether you’re seeking targeted pain relief or wish to unwind from daily stress.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • A deep tissue massage for chronic pain and injuries can address a wide variety of conditions related to muscle tension, stiffness, and restricted mobility. Many clients find it helpful for ongoing back pain, neck stiffness, and shoulder discomfort caused by poor posture or repetitive activities such as sitting at a desk for long hours. Athletes often use this therapy to recover from strains, sprains, or overuse injuries like tennis elbow or shin splints. The technique involves breaking down adhesions, also known as “knots”,which form when muscle fibres and connective tissue become stuck together. These adhesions can restrict movement, cause inflammation, and lead to significant discomfort if left untreated. By using slow strokes and firm pressure, a deep tissue massage helps release these problem areas, allowing for improved circulation and faster healing. It also provides benefits for conditions like fibromyalgia, plantar fasciitis, sciatica, and even high blood pressure. Beyond physical relief, many people experience improved sleep quality and stress reduction after treatment. Whether you’re managing chronic conditions, recovering from an injury, or simply trying to reduce muscle tension, a deep tissue massage can be customized to support your specific needs and promote long-term well-being.

  • Many people wonder about the difference between a deep tissue massage vs. Swedish massage for relaxation and pain relief. While both techniques use similar strokes such as kneading and gliding, their intensity and purpose are very different. A Swedish massage primarily focuses on relaxation, improving circulation, and providing a soothing experience. It uses lighter pressure and longer, flowing movements to reduce stress and promote a sense of calm. By contrast, a deep tissue massage is designed to address deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue. Therapists apply slower, more intense pressure with their hands, elbows, and forearms to break up adhesions and release chronic muscle tension. This makes deep tissue therapy particularly effective for people dealing with long-term back pain, stiff shoulders, or postural issues. While Swedish massage leaves you feeling relaxed and refreshed, deep tissue massage works to correct underlying musculoskeletal problems that may be causing discomfort. It is especially helpful for athletes, desk workers, or anyone who experiences repetitive strain injuries. Choosing between the two depends on your goals: relaxation and stress relief may call for Swedish, while pain management and muscle recovery are best addressed with a deep tissue massage.

  • When considering how often to get a deep tissue massage for pain relief and recovery, the answer depends on your individual needs, lifestyle, and health goals. For those experiencing chronic muscle pain or recovering from injuries, weekly sessions may be recommended initially. This allows therapists to progressively address deep-seated tension and gradually restore mobility. Once noticeable improvement is achieved, treatments can be reduced to once every two to four weeks for maintenance. Athletes often schedule deep tissue sessions around their training cycles, before competitions to prepare muscles and after workouts to aid recovery. Office workers, on the other hand, may benefit from regular appointments to combat postural stress and stiffness from prolonged sitting. It’s important to listen to your body and consult with your therapist, who can recommend a personalized plan. Unlike lighter massage techniques, a deep tissue massage works intensely on muscles, so allowing recovery time between sessions is key. Consistency is more important than frequency, whether monthly or bi-weekly, regular treatments help manage pain, prevent injury, and enhance overall wellness. Over time, a structured routine of deep tissue massage supports long-term physical and mental health.

  • A common question is, does a deep tissue massage hurt or should it feel good? The answer is that while this therapy involves firm pressure, it should never be unbearably painful. A skilled therapist will work within your comfort level, using slow, controlled strokes that target deeper muscle layers without causing unnecessary discomfort. Some people may experience mild soreness during or after a session, similar to the feeling after an intense workout. This is a natural response as muscles release long-held tension and adhesions are broken down. The sensation should ease within a day or two, leaving you with improved mobility and reduced stiffness. It is important to communicate with your therapist throughout the massage. If the pressure feels too intense, they can adjust their technique to ensure it remains effective yet comfortable. Many clients actually describe the experience as a “good pain”,intense but deeply relieving. Drinking plenty of water after your treatment can help flush out toxins released during the massage and reduce post-session soreness. When performed correctly, a deep tissue massage is a safe and highly beneficial therapy that provides long-lasting relief from muscle pain without overwhelming the body.

  • While highly beneficial, it’s important to ask, who should not get a deep tissue massage for safety reasons? This therapy is generally safe for most people, but certain conditions may require caution or complete avoidance. Individuals with blood clotting disorders, recent fractures, or open wounds should not undergo deep tissue treatments, as the intense pressure could worsen these issues. Pregnant women may also need to avoid deep tissue massage unless it is specifically tailored for pregnancy, as strong pressure can pose risks in certain areas of the body. People with osteoporosis or fragile bones should approach with caution, as should those with severe skin conditions or infections. If you suffer from chronic medical conditions like heart disease, cancer, or uncontrolled high blood pressure, it’s best to consult your doctor before scheduling an appointment. Additionally, those recovering from recent surgeries should wait until they are fully healed before considering this therapy. For the majority of clients, however, a deep tissue massage is safe and highly effective when performed by an experienced therapist. At Walking On Clouds, our team always carries out a consultation before treatment to ensure the massage is appropriate for your health and wellness needs.

“I’ve been going to Walking on Clouds for several months now and truly appreciate having a world-class massage on my doorstep in Hampstead. Gabriela and Alex give a deep tissue massage that has really helped to relieve and revive my body. It’s fair to say I have left every time walking on clouds, and the next day too. Can’t recommend them highly enough.”

“I have been to Walking on Clouds twice, having treatments with Gabriela and Mihaela. They were both exceptional. The therapists are attentive and focus on designing the best treatment for your specific condition. Amazing massages! The environment is very relaxing and conveniently located in a quiet corner in the middle of Hampstead village. A great addition to the neighbourhood. I will be a regular! If you are looking for a kind and professional service, this is the place.”

“While in London for work - coming from the Netherlands - in September and November, I went both times for a massage to Gabriela from Walking on Clouds. If I would live in London I would go to her every week. She is a fabulous and strong masseuse. After only having been there once when returning she remembered that I have back issues.
I took hot stone massage the first time and deep tissue massage the second time. The practise is very quiet, clean and good equiped. Gabriela and her partner really know their profession and make you feel very welcome in their practise.”
